History
Leidseplein, where the road to Leiden once began, originated in the 17th century as a gathering place for coaches, carts, and horses used for transportation. Farmers from outside the city also stabled their horse-drawn wagons here. The square was dominated by the Leidsepoort for many years and, after 1774, by the theater until a successful enterprise built a colossal building across from the theater in 1912: the Hirsch & Cie fashion house. Despite the growth ambitions of this department store, two buildings escaped its expansion, one of which is the Leidseplein 33. Since around 1901, this address has housed the handcraft shop of the women's association Tesselschade. This was one of the many sales outlets of the association where handicrafts were sold.
